Soaring electric prices and a focus on energy affordability helped deliver Democratic New Jersey Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill’s double-digit win on Election Day.
But now that she’s notched the win, delivering on her campaign promise to freeze utility rates on her first day in office is another matter.
“The New Jersey governor is the most powerful governor in the country,” said Erick Ford, president of the New Jersey Energy Policy Coalition. “That gives her a lot of opportunity to get things done.”
On the campaign trail, Sherrill promised to use executive power to freeze rates, raising a host of legal issues and concerns about long-term impacts to energy prices.
