Sherrod Brown wants to ride high energy prices back to Capitol Hill

Nearly two years after voters ended his long-running congressional career, Sherrod Brown is banking on energy price spikes to help send him back to Washington.

The Ohio Democrat’s strategy — which relies on remixing his longtime “dignity of work” agenda with concern over skyrocketing utility bills and gasoline prices — will serve as a key test of how Democrats’ nationwide energy affordability messaging can fit with labor priorities.

Brown served three terms in the Senate and seven in the House before he was unseated in 2024 by Sen. Bernie Moreno (R), part of a yearslong shift the Buckeye State has taken toward Republicans.

He’s now challenging Sen. Jon Husted (R), the former lieutenant governor who Gov. Mike DeWine (R) appointed to the state’s other U.S. Senate seat after JD Vance was elected vice president.
