“I want to make sure we are protecting our parks,” state Sen. Gayle Harrell told POLITICO. “But I also want to make sure we’re not moving to the point we can’t do anything in our parks. There is a balance.”

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The state Senate sponsor of a bill that would bar golf courses, lodges and other facilities from state parks said Tuesday she’s open to changing the legislation — to a point.

Sen. Gayle Harrell (R-Stuart) said she is willing to work with anyone to improve the bill but wants to see the proposals before commenting on them.

“I want to make sure we are protecting our parks,” she told POLITICO. “But I also want to make sure we’re not moving to the point we can’t do anything in our parks. There is a balance.”

Environmentalists on Tuesday praised the bill but urged the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources to strengthen the measure, which was filed after a firestorm of opposition last summer to proposed golf courses, lodges and pickleball courts in state parks.
