Seven Democratic governors are re-upping pressure on EPA to start monitoring for microplastics in drinking water.

The governors sent a petition last week urging the agency to add the tiny plastics to its list of pollutants subject to nationwide monitoring requirements.

“We deserve to better understand the potential for microplastics contamination in our drinking water,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) said in a news release. Murphy led the coalition, which also includes the governors of Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Wisconsin and Connecticut.

The petition comes as the agency sailed past its goal deadline for releasing the sixth version of its Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, which will add up to 30 contaminants to the monitoring list by 2027.
