States think twice about adopting California’s clean truck rule

The hesitancy comes as the White House has sought to crack down on state climate laws. Local trucking groups have raised concerns too.

A half-dozen states are considering delaying enforcement of a high-profile climate regulation for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, under pressure from the trucking industry.

The campaign has played out in the 10 states that adopted California’s Advanced Clean Truck Rule, which seeks to sharply curtail the sale of gas-fueled trucks by the mid-2030s.

The rollback effort scored a win earlier this month when Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) agreed to delay enforcement of the rules in his state for two years.

Bills to repeal the clean truck plan or delay it are under consideration in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Washington. A similar bill in New Mexico died in committee this spring.
