The Supreme Court has handed the maker of Roundup weedkiller a preliminary win in its effort to scrap thousands of lawsuits targeting its product.
In a short order issued Friday, the justices granted a petition from Monsanto alleging a state court wrongly awarded a $1.25 million verdict to John Durnell, a Missouri resident who developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after decades of using Roundup.
The move comes after the White House urged the Supreme Court to weigh in on the case over the objections of Make America Healthy Again advocates and green groups.
At issue is billions of dollars in damages that Bayer, which bought Monsanto in 2018, could be forced to pay from thousands of lawsuits linking glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, to health problems.
