The energy disruptions caused by the war in Iran has boosted the need for Canadian gas exports — and for supplies of the fuel from other stable countries and regions, TC Energy CEO François Poirier said in an interview Monday at the POLITICO Pub at CERAWeek by S&P Global.
Canada’s energy should also help reinforce its position as a partner to the U.S., since American companies purchase most of Canada’s oil. And it should help spur the U.S. government to speed up permitting of new pipelines and other energy infrastructure, he said.
“There’s a very important lesson to learn from this, and that is that ample supply of energy that’s affordable and reliable to the world is what provides for a good quality of life,” Poirier said.
Canada provides about two-thirds of the roughly 6 million barrels per day of oil that the U.S. imports, and it also has vast reserves of gas in its western provinces that haven’t had access to markets until recently.
