Europe’s economy relies on natural ecosystems that are dying faster than ever while the European Union cuts the very rules that protect them, scientists caution.
“Political realities across the world have undergone a seismic shift,” the European Environment Agency wrote in its report on the state of Europe’s environment. This shift has “focused minds and investments on defense and security,” pushing climate and the environment down the list of priorities.
That has serious consequences for Europeans.
Geopolitical tensions and threats converge “with economic, social, environmental and climate crises to create systemic risks to the European way of life,” the EU agency said in its report, published every five years.
