Litigation once accompanied the Barrens darter, but now a bid to protect the Tennessee fish appears to be going swimmingly.
With just a few hours remaining in a 60-day public comment period that expires at midnight Tuesday, only nine individuals or organizations have opined on the Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal to list the Barrens darter as endangered.
Two organizations and five individuals wrote in support of the listing under the Endangered Species Act and one person confined himself to a one-sentence statement of geographic fact.
But the most telling comments may have come from the Tennessee Farm Bureau, which asked federal officials for understanding while not explicitly opposing or supporting the proposed ESA listing.
