Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie on Tuesday announced a subpoena for California’s air pollution regulator over rules critics say amount to an electric vehicle mandate.
The Kentucky Republican said the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has been denying automakers approval to bring vehicles to market unless companies agree to comply with rules Congress nullified last year.
“Forcing Americans to buy unreliable, and costly, EVs would eliminate consumer choice, strain our electric grid, raise costs, and increase our reliance on entities tied to the Chinese Communist Party,” Guthrie wrote in a letter dated Monday to CARB Chair Lauren Sanchez. “We will continue to follow the facts and demand accountability from California.”
Last year, Congress and President Donald Trump used the Congressional Review Act — in an unprecedented move — to undo Biden-era EPA waivers for three California vehicle emissions rulemakings.
