The Trump administration “will not put up the tariff wall” on some countries, said Secretary Scott Bessent.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested Tuesday that President Donald Trump may not impose immediate tariffs on U.S. trading partners April 2, as the president has repeatedly promised to do.

“What’s going to happen on April 2, each country will receive a number that we believe represents their tariffs. So for some countries, it could be quite low. For some countries it could be quite high,” Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo.

Bessent said that the goal would be to negotiate to remove those barriers and that if countries address concerns outlined by the United States, “We will not put up the tariff wall.”

A White House aide, however, insisted that the timeline for new tariffs has not changed.
