The Trump administration plans to usher a massive auto race into downtown Washington in August as part of a broader celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday, President Donald Trump announced Friday.
Flanked by senior officials in the Oval Office, Trump signed an executive order to launch what the White House has dubbed “the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. — the first ever INDYCAR street race in the Nation’s capital.”
Trump’s order directs the Interior and Transportation departments to designate within 14 days a route “suitable for conducting an INDYCAR street race and that will showcase the majesty of our capital city in celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence,” the order says. The president also directs those secretaries to issue the necessary permits, approvals and authorizations to conduct the race.
The event will take place from Aug. 21 to 23, Trump said. “I love the racing. I don’t have a lot of time to watch it, but I love the racing,” the president said.
