President Donald Trump has appointed Sean Duffy, the secretary of Transportation, to a dual role as interim leader of NASA.
The move comes amid a chaotic time for the space agency. Trump dropped his first nominee in May, and the agency remains without a permanent leader. Potential top-line budget cuts also loom over the agency, and thousands of staffers are set to leave.
Trump announced Duffy’s appointment in a Truth Social post Wednesday night, praising his handling of the Department of Transportation. “He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time,” Trump wrote.
“Honored to accept this mission. Time to take over space. Let’s launch,” Duffy wrote on X in response.
