The Trump administration could next whittle down the ranks of senior executives and top scientific officials across the government.

The Office of Personnel Management in a memo released Monday ordered agencies to review “allocations” of Senior Executive Service, Senior Level and Scientific/Professional positions on their respective payrolls and “request any necessary adjustments.”

The move is in response to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last month to limit government hiring and align it with his policy agenda. He has pushed to shrink the federal workforce, which could coincide with the managerial corps being depleted as well.

“This review is especially important in light of headcount reductions and workforce restructuring, which may lead to a corresponding reduction in the need for SES, SL and ST allocations,” said Veronica Hinton, associate director for workforce policy and innovation, in the memo sent to chief human capital officers.
