Environmental and climate change groups are slamming Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ahead of his expected exit from the presidential race.
The Natural Resources Defense Council’s NRDC Action Fund and the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund said that if Kennedy drops out and endorses former President Donald Trump, as he is said to be planning to do this week, it would be complete a betrayal of his previous environmental advocacy.
Kennedy, the son of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of the former President John F. Kennedy, was once an environmental lawyer and a major figure in the movement, including at the NRDC and the Waterkeeper Alliance. He was even once rumored to be in the running to lead EPA, or take another environmental job, under former President Barack Obama.
But Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign this year, fueled by false anti-vaccine claims and an alliance with supporters of Trump, has led the movement to denounce him. And reporting Wednesday that he will drop out and back Trump has sealed the deal.
