Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Tuesday that his department is continuing to review the massive $16 billion Gateway project critical to New York City’s commuters — a disclosure that comes after President Donald Trump declared it dead.
Duffy told reporters at LaGuardia Airport that Gateway and a $7 billion extension of the Second Avenue Subway — both of which have a crucial role in New York City’s transportation infrastructure — are under administrative review, not terminated. But he said the federal shutdown is hampering DOT’s work.
“So we’re in the process of doing a review on those two projects,” Duffy said. “The problem is our staff has been furloughed. I have one person doing the reviews.”
That’s a different perspective on the mega-projects than one Trump offered to reporters Oct. 15, when he said in an apparent reference to Gateway: “The project in Manhattan. The project in New York. It’s billions and billions of dollars that [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer has worked 20 years to get. It’s terminated.”
