President Donald Trump has extended a freeze on federal civilian hiring.

In a memo issued Thursday, Trump directed that the pause on hiring continue through July 15. The federal hiring freeze doesn’t apply to military personnel or positions related to immigration enforcement, national security or public safety. It also excludes presidential nominees and appointees.

The move extends the freeze Trump put into place on his first day in office as part of his administration’s broad push to slash the size of the federal workforce. In his Jan. 20 order, Trump directed the head of the White House budget office to work with the head of the U.S. DOGE Service to submit a plan within 90 days to reduce the size of the federal workforce.

The deadline for that plan is April 20.
