Republican lawmakers are protesting the Trump administration’s plan to end an oversight council that polices internal watchdogs across the federal government.
The Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency told senior members of Congress in a letter sent Saturday that the Office of Management and Budget had decided to end the group’s funding. In turn, CIGIE’s “statutorily mandated functions” would cease while 25 employees would be furloughed, effective Wednesday.
“The shuttering of CIGIE will result in the loss of shared services and cost-efficiencies that have been built up over the last 17 years to support the 72 Offices of Inspectors General (OIGs), which will make those services more expensive for taxpayers,” said Tammy Hull, the U.S. Postal Service inspector general and CIGIE’s acting chair.
The council’s letter was obtained by POLITICO’s E&E News, and it was first reported on by The Washington Post.
