President Donald Trump has proposed a limited salary bump for federal employees, while those who work in law enforcement are set to receive more.
Last week, Trump submitted to Congress his alternative pay plan for civilian staffers in the government. The president said he determined that base pay will increase by 1 percent while there will be no locality pay increase next year.
The pay adjustment will take effect on the first day of the first pay period starting on or after Jan. 1, 2026, and “address our ability to attract and retain a skilled and highly talented Federal workforce while charting a fiscally responsible course,” Trump said.
Federal law enforcement officers, however, will see a bigger wage bump under the president’s plan. They will receive the same 3.8 percent pay increase as military personnel “to increase recruitment and retention in critical law enforcement roles and to ensure our great Federal law enforcement officers are treated fairly,” the president said.
