Trump recommends USDA official to direct World Food Programme

The Trump administration has nominated USDA’s undersecretary for trade and foreign affairs to be the next director of the U.N. World Food Programme.

The State Department announced Luke Lindberg’s candidacy Wednesday, touting his work overseeing Agriculture Department international aid programs such as the McGovern-Dole Food for Education Program and Food for Progress.

Lindberg has also been a key leader in USDA’s absorption and restructuring of the Food for Peace program, which was previously housed under the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Cindy McCain, WFP’s current director, announced in February that she’d leave the post next month, citing health issues following a stroke in October. She’s directed the organization since April 2023.
