Trump says no windmills unless there’s a long-standing commitment

The Trump Interior Department previously stopped another offshore wind project already under construction, but ultimately lifted that hold after reaching an agreement with the state.

After several recent comments attacking wind energy, President Donald Trump offered a modest opening Tuesday to at least some of the renewable energy projects that may have secured a long-standing legal commitment.

“We don’t allow windmills,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting. “We’re not allowing any windmills to go up, I mean, unless there’s a legal situation where somebody committed to it a long time ago.”

The comments from the president, who did not elaborate, suggest there is some ceiling to his administration’s efforts to curtail U.S. offshore wind development.

The Trump administration has taken several actions to block wind development, including halting construction on the Revolution Wind offshore wind project in New England. The administration has also signaled in recent legal filings it intends to vacate a key permit for a planned offshore wind project off the coast of Maryland.
