Science agencies across the federal government lost a combined total of nearly 95,000 workers between September 2024 and December 2025 as the Trump administration slashed government jobs, according to a new analysis.

The report by the nonpartisan nonprofit Partnership for Public Service found that the workforces of science agencies across the government dropped by nearly 12 percent during that time.

The cuts came as the Trump administration made squeezing the federal workforce one of its top priorities last year. The extent of the workforce reductions in 2025 are now becoming clear as the government has published data through December.

The administration and its supporters say the cuts were needed to reduce wasteful spending and shrink a bloated federal workforce.
