Trump team plans ‘US Tech Force’

The administration has made winning the artificial intelligence race a top priority for agencies across the government.

The Trump administration is planning a surge in federal tech talent to maintain the United States’ edge on artificial intelligence.

Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, stressed in a memo released Monday that agencies need to build that workforce of the future, and build it now. Dominating AI has become a central focus for President Donald Trump and his appointees as they seek to boost data centers and preempt regulation of the emerging technology.

Kupor said in his memo that the federal government faces “critical skills gaps” in AI, cybersecurity and data science.

“Too often, agencies lack the technology expertise and leadership required to upgrade and modernize technology systems,” Kupor said. “To effectively lead in the AI race, the Federal government must rapidly close these gaps.”
