President Donald Trump is sketching out big summer plans, featuring fireworks at Mount Rushmore and a Washington auto race to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday.
The National Park Service on Monday announced a comeback of fireworks at the South Dakota national memorial July 3 while administration officials offered new details about an auto race through downtown Washington that Trump ordered to take place near the National Mall this summer.
“This means so much to him, personally, to be able to preside over our nation’s big birthday,” U.S. Chief of Protocol Monica Crowley said of the president at a news conference Monday previewing the summer’s events.
Fireworks at Mount Rushmore — a priority in Trump’s first term and a contentious topic — will return after a five-year pause, NPS announced. Public tickets for the event will be available through a lottery.
