The money comes from disaster funds appropriated by Congress last year.

The Agriculture Department on Friday said it will roll out approximately $1 billion in recovery benefits for livestock producers impacted by wildfires and floods.

The funds are available to producers affected by natural disasters in 2023 and 2024 to “help offset increased supplemental feed costs,” per a USDA press release. Applications for the payments open Sept. 15 and close Oct. 31.

“USDA will continue to put farmers first and ensure they have the relief they need to weather storms and build for the future,” Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement.

The funds come from the continuing resolution Congress passed in late 2024, the American Relief Act, appropriating disaster funds for victims of wildfires and other catastrophes. USDA’s Supplemental Disaster Relief Program has already begun accepting applications from farmers who lost crops to natural disasters.
