Key Senate negotiators are projecting tepid optimism about the ongoing energy project permitting reform talks as pressure from industry mounts and the clock ticks.
Returning from a two-week recess, Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) was upbeat about the work done over the break, and predicted a product could be ready for public consumption by the summer.
“We’re making steady progress, and it would not be unreasonable to have something to show our caucuses by the August recess,” Whitehouse told POLITICO’s E&E News.
Broadly, a deal is expected to include an electric transmission build-out, faster environmental reviews for all kinds of projects, new limits on litigation and certainty for permitted projects.
