The New Mexico-based conservation group WildEarth Guardians has tapped a longtime environmental group leader and former sportscaster as its new leader.

Sean Stevens started as the conservation group’s new executive director last week, the group announced. Stevens previously spent more than 17 years at the nonprofit Oregon Wild, including 12 years as its executive director. He did a stint as a sportscaster in Oregon prior to joining the conservation group.

He takes the helm of the nonprofit as conservation organizations are preparing for years of playing defense against the Trump administration’s rollbacks of environmental regulations.

“Guardians has continued to be a leading voice and advocate for the wild during Guardians’ recent transitions and the initial chaos of this second Trump administration,” Stevens told supporters last week in an email. “To be able to lead this savvy and passionate organization at this critical time for the West is an opportunity I couldn’t resist, and a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously.”
