Lawmakers say work on nominees would continue, but legislative priorities may suffer.

Legislative business has been subject to intense partisan strife all year. It just got more complicated.

As the government was barreling toward a shutdown, lawmakers on Tuesday evening were grappling with what that means for them. Many said legislative business would continue, but questions abound.

Congress, which is funded by the Legislative Branch appropriations bill, is not immune from the shutdown’s effects, including staff furloughs.

“We’re scheduled to have a hearing next week, and we’re hoping to follow through with that,” said Environment and Public Works Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.). “I think EPA is going to shut down a lot, and so that’s a concern.”
