White House says Canada, Mexico, China tariff hikes still possible Saturday

President Donald Trump remains committed to the possibility of imposing 25 percent tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of goods from Canada and Mexico as early as Saturday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday.

Trump “was asked and answered this question this past weekend, when he took a lot of questions from the press, and he said that the Feb. 1 date for Canada and Mexico still holds,” Leavitt said.

The president has also said he is “very much still considering” a 10 percent tariff on all Chinese goods beginning Saturday, Leavitt added.

Trump originally threatened the 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico back in November in order to pressure the countries to do more to stop illegal immigration and fentanyl flows. He also threatened the 10 percent tariff on China because of the fentanyl concern.
