A senior Democrat this week condemned the Trump administration’s posture toward various global climate initiatives, after the administration successfully beat back a vote on a climate tax for global shipping.
In separate letters and statements, Senate Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse decried the administration’s treatment of the International Monetary Fund’s climate initiatives and the International Maritime Organization’s push to establish the first international climate tax on shipping.
The Rhode Island Democrat accused the administration of using “browbeating, extortion and backroom deals” to keep international bodies from moving forward with climate goals.
“We’re basically like the gangster arm of the fossil fuel industry, trying to throw our weight around internationally and do the dirty work of the fossil fuel barons,” Whitehouse said in an interview.
