Jamie Williams, president of the influential conservation group the Wilderness Society, plans to resign from his post later this year after nearly 12 years at the helm, he told staff in an email last month.

“I have always been a strong believer of changing organizational leadership after a long run to bring in new energy and to continue evolving the organization for greatest impact,” Williams wrote in a Jan. 19 email to employees.

“As difficult as it will be for me to step away later this year, this is the right moment to initiate that transition.  On a personal note, my wife and I have decided it’s time to move out of DC and to find other ways to contribute to conservation.”

Williams took over as the group’s president in 2012 after serving in senior roles for The Nature Conservancy. He’s a well-known figure in Washington’s environmental and conservation circles, and he’s one of several high-profile green group bosses who have resigned or announced their departures this year.
