Democrats left the classified briefing with the Energy secretary largely unsatisfied with the administration’s plans.

A classified briefing from Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Tuesday left some senators with questions about the Trump administration’s intentions for Venezuela and its vast oil reserves.

Wright — who is slated to visit Venezuela and meet with its leaders — spoke with senators behind closed doors about plans for the South American country’s oil. The United States has maintained control over Venezuelan crude sales since a military offensive last month.

But the briefing left “more questions than answers,” said Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.). He said he didn’t get specifics about plans for Venezuelan elections or how the United States will control revenue from oil sales.

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) similarly said she came into the briefing hoping to learn about why the United States was still involved in Venezuelan affairs. “I don’t necessarily think that I got my answers to that question,” she said.
