After a monthslong winter hibernation, Yellowstone National Park just saw its first grizzly bear of 2026 wandering wide awake.
Yellowstone biologists spotted the grizzly Monday as it chowed down on a bull bison carcass in the park’s northern backcountry. The sighting of the bear came on a similar timeline as in years past.
All of the park’s first spring observations of grizzlies having fallen in early March since 2022, according to a news release.
Female bears with cubs will stay put a bit longer, usually venturing from their dens in April or May.
