Zeldin gets bipartisan pushback on budget plan

The Trump administration’s plan for draconian EPA budget cuts next year got a chilly reception Wednesday from both Republican and Democratic appropriators.

“I find many of them problematic,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), chair of the Senate Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, told EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin during a hearing on the White House’s fiscal 2026 budget blueprint.

Also of concern, Murkowski added, were his reorganization plans for the agency, as well as grant cancellations and funding freezes.

Regardless of Americans’ feelings about EPA, she said, “we benefit from its data-driven decisionmaking, the remediation efforts, and the mission to protect human health and environment.”
