The Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it will award $10,000 bonuses to air traffic controllers and technicians who didn’t call out of work during the 43-day federal shutdown.
The department and Federal Aviation Administration said only 776 workers had “perfect attendance” and will receive the money, with the payments set to land no later than Dec. 9.
There are nearly 11,000 fully certified controllers nationwide. They were required to work without pay during the shutdown as essential employees.
It’s unclear where the money, which appears to total more than $7.7 million, is coming from, as well as which technicians the department is referring to. DOT didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
