This government shutdown marks the 21st time federal funding has lapsed since 1977.

Whether it’ll surpass the longest shutdown on record that lasted 34 days or clock in among the shorter ones that lasted just a few days remains to be seen. Republican and Democratic leaders in Washington showed no signs of relenting Thursday as this government shutdown entered its second day.

The most recent funding lapse occurred during the first Trump administration, stretching from December 2018 until January 2019. That fight over President Donald Trump’s insistence that lawmakers spend more than $5 billion on a border wall ended after Trump conceded and negotiators promised to work on a bigger immigration and border security deal.
