A Great Lakes Republican and Northern California Democrat have been tapped to lead the Congressional National Marine Sanctuary Caucus in the House of Representatives, officials announced Wednesday.

Republican Rep. Jack Bergman, whose district encompasses Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman, who represents a 350-mile stretch of Pacific coastline and near inland areas, will advocate for the protection of 18 marine sanctuaries in the 119th Congress. Bergman is new to the role as co-chair, while Huffman returns for a second term co-chairing the diverse, 34-member caucus.

Members work closely with the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation to foster stewardship for the thousands of square miles of ocean and lakes prized for their vast and unique ecosystems as well as maritime heritage.

Bergman noted that the local economy in his area depends on activities like fishing, tourism and recreation.
