An EPA veteran from the Biden and Obama administrations will now lead the Big Apple’s environmental agency.
Lisa Garcia has been appointed commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday. Garcia has decades of experience in environmental law and policy, having worked in state and federal government as well as for green organizations.
“I’ve been proud to fight for environmental and climate justice throughout my career. Those are the exact same principles I will bring to DEP,” Garcia said in a statement.
She added, “While the infrastructure and resiliency needs of New York City may be challenging, I know this department and this administration are up to the task, and I am ready to get to work.”
