Interior Secretary Doug Burgum on Tuesday launched a new artificial intelligence framework for his agency promising that AI and machine learning will help modernize government work.

The order mandates the creation of a chief artificial intelligence officer to work under the Interior secretary and coordinate with the department’s various bureaus and offices.

“AI helps teams to reduce manual review work, sharpen analytics, and make faster, data-informed decisions,” Burgum wrote in the order signed Sept. 17 and published Tuesday. “To fully unlock the potential of AI, we must scale intelligently, govern responsibly, and enable our workforce to lead with confidence and clarity.”
