BASE jumping and illegal camping have reportedly occurred in the park amid a government shutdown that’s cut staffing at national parks.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum this week has sought to refute reports that one of the nation’s biggest national parks has run amok amid the government shutdown.

In the wake of reports about illegal camping and BASE jumping in Yosemite National Park in California, Burgum told Fox Business on Wednesday that “false claims” in the media were being spread by “grifters” trying to cash in on the government shutdown.

On the social media site X on Tuesday, Burgum also called those reports “misinformation.” But he also emphasized that illegal activities being reported in the media were being addressed by park law enforcement.

“Unauthorized camping, squatting, and illegal activities like BASE jumping are being addressed with firm, appropriate law enforcement action,” he wrote.
