Despite a federal government shutdown that has constrained staffing availability, the National Park Service said it will send staff to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to help clean up after oceanfront homes fell into the Atlantic Ocean this week.

Five houses located in Buxton, North Carolina, all collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, NPS reported. Later that night, another one fell, while two more houses collapsed Wednesday and Thursday.

The houses tumbled into the ocean as Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto churned offshore, creating rough surf in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, where the seashore is located.

About two dozen Cape Hatteras staffers will collect and dispose of debris beginning south of the site of the fallen houses, the seashore said in a news release.
