The deadline for New York to submit its final environmental assessment for a controversial proposed expansion of the Cross Bronx Expressway to the Federal Highway Administration is getting pushed back for a second time.
The target date for the state Department of Transportation to submit the crucial document — which will lay out its plan for how to rehabilitate the aging highway — was originally scheduled for March, before getting pushed back to April. Now, it’s set for May 7.
“As we close out today’s federal deadline, the Bronx River Alliance and the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion continue to oppose the proposed expansion,” Siddhartha Sánchez, executive director of the Bronx River Alliance, said in a statement. “We remain in talks with the state and want to partner on a plan that maintains the highway’s footprint and delivers real community benefits.”
NYSDOT did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but previously told POLITICO that the deadlines are set through an agreement between NYSDOT and the FHWA based on “projected review times.”
