The Department of Energy is making big spending cuts, despite bipartisan pushback and anxiety.

The Department of Energy is advancing its efforts to cancel billions of dollars in awards for energy projects — from hydrogen to carbon capture — that don’t align with the Trump administration’s “goals, policies and priorities,” according to an internal document viewed by POLITICO’s E&E News.

The department is sending termination notices to scores of award recipients and informing them that funding will be shifted to projects that better match President Donald Trump’s policy objectives, according to a DOE official granted anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the press.

“This project does not align with agency priorities,” an agency official wrote in one termination letter viewed by E&E News. “Termination will allow for funding to be directed towards projects designed to align with DOE’s goals and priorities.”

DOE in that letter also asked the recipient to return any unobligated balance of funds and to “cooperate fully in the closeout process.”
