TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The Office of Public Counsel has filed an initial objection to Duke Energy Florida’s three-year rate hike request on procedural grounds.
The details: Public Counsel Walt Trierweiler, in a Feb. 22 letter to the Florida Public Service Commission, objected to Duke Energy basing its rate hike request for three separate years of future earnings starting in 2025.

The objection could require additional proceedings in advance of Duke filing its testimony April 2. Trierweiler also indicated his office is considering a separate legal challenge on the issue.
Duke Energy wrote in a Jan. 31 letter that basing the rate increase on three “test” years would avoid multiple rate requests. The utility also said that its last two rate settlements included multiple year increases.
