Amid aggressive efforts undertaken by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency to slash federal employment, the Interior Department is weighing a new reorganization that could consolidate communications, contracting and interactive technologies across agencies.

The possible reorganization, which was reported first by Government Executive, a news site that covers federal agencies, further rattled career Interior employees who have been scrambling for morsels of information on Reddit and through Signal chats designed to deter eavesdropping from DOGE operatives and political appointees intent on secrecy.

“They are cutting off the head and expect the rest of us to function,” a self-identified Fish and Wildlife Service employee wrote on a Bluesky social media channel devoted to agency issues.
