Zohran Mamdani triumphed in New York’s mayoral election by focusing on cost-of-living concerns while eschewing other progressive causes, including climate change.
But supporters said they are hoping Mamdani will pick up the banner for climate action when he is sworn into office Jan. 1.
One of the clearest signs of a potential pivot is that Mamdani is consulting with architects of the Green New Deal on how to implement climate policy in a way that improves quality of life across the city without jacking up prices.
Green groups see an opportunity to infuse environmental justice into many of Mamdani’s cost-cutting campaign promises such as constructing more affordable housing and making buses fast and free.
