The Trump administration is poised to shutter a primary source of public information about climate science by ceasing updates to climate.gov, which for 15 years has provided an entry point for people seeking to better understand the climate and growing threats associated with climate warming.
The website’s former managing editor, Rebecca Lindsey, said Wednesday that the remaining NOAA contract employees who wrote and produced articles, graphics, photos and storyboards for the site learned their jobs had been eliminated under a contract renewal with private company providing internet services to the government.
The long-term fate of the website is unknown. NOAA officials did not respond to a request for comment.
Lindsey edited the website as a contractor since its launch in 2010 and joined the agency in 2023 as a federal employee, only to be fired in February with the first round of probationary staff layoffs.
