Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer teased in a floor speech Wednesday that Democrats are preparing to release a plan to lower energy costs as part of a broader effort to confront affordability issues.

The New York Democrat said he will introduce legislation Thursday to address what he said is a root cause of higher food prices. After that, Schumer said, Senate Democrats will unveil plans to tackle the high cost of energy, childcare, housing and health care.

The forthcoming energy price plan, of which there are no details, would come as affordability becomes an increasingly salient policy issue ahead of this year’s midterm elections. It would also coincide with the Trump administration’s current scramble to lower energy prices as data centers and global conflicts cause utility bills and gasoline prices to surge.

“Democrats will keep going,” Schumer said. “We recently rolled out our agenda to tackle the housing crisis. Soon, we will present our plan to lower the cost of energy, and childcare, and to fix our broken health care system that Republicans have sabotaged by letting premiums skyrocket.”
