Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chair Christopher Hanson appears poised to serve a second term, keeping the agency’s leadership stable during a pivotal time for the industry.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted 18-1 on Wednesday to approve Hanson’s renomination for another five years. Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) was the sole “no” vote.

“He has demonstrated his commitment to ensuring the safety and the security of our nation’s use of nuclear energy,” Chair Tom Carper (D-Del.) said before the vote. “Chair Hanson has also bolstered America’s energy security and advanced our efforts to slow climate change.”

Hanson, originally appointed by former President Donald Trump in 2020 and renominated by President Joe Biden in March, earned the crucial support of ranking member Shelley Moore Capito after assuaging some of her concerns during last month’s confirmation hearing.
