Thune starts process for preventing Homeland Security shutdown

Senate leaders and the White House are still trying to rewrite the Homeland Security funding bill.

The Senate could vote as soon as Thursday on legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security and federal disaster aid programs. What that legislation looks like is an open question.

Republicans and Democrats remain far apart in their negotiations to reform immigration enforcement, and it’s not clear whether they can reach a deal in time to avoid a DHS shutdown before Friday’s deadline.

Senators are hoping to vote on a reworked Homeland Security spending bill, but it appears unlikely to come together in time.

Plan B is another short-term funding extension for DHS, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard and other bureaus to allow the talks to continue, but Democrats have all but rejected that idea.
